About

Okello Herbert

Documentary Storyteller | Photographer | Writer.

I document people, communities and programmes through human-centred storytelling, documentary photography, film and editorial writing.

Since 2016, I have built my practice through Untold Stories Uganda, my human-interest storytelling platform dedicated to documenting lived experiences, social realities and the people behind the stories. I have interviewed more than 1,500 people, working across diverse communities and contexts to tell stories that inform, connect and give visibility to experiences that might otherwise go unheard.

My work spans child protection, public health, human rights, peacebuilding, food security and cultural heritage. From documenting child protection programmes across 44 locations to capturing the experiences of refugees, communities affected by conflict, children receiving HIV services, farmers strengthening food security and communities preserving their cultural heritage, I bring field experiences into compelling narratives grounded in people’s voices and realities.

I am also an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda.

Beyond individual stories, I collaborate with organisations and businesses to develop integrated editorial and multimedia projects, including documentary films, photography, feature articles, magazines and photobooks. I combine field documentation, editorial judgement and visual storytelling to produce accurate, engaging content that supports organisational communication, advocacy and impact reporting.

Based in Uganda and open to travel, I work with organisations and businesses to document the people, work and change that deserve to be seen, understood and remembered.
